    English/Composition & Applied Linguistics, PhD

    The doctoral program in Composition and Applied Linguistics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest and largest in the United States. With accomplished, international faculty in the fields of Composition, TESOL, Rhetoric, and Applied Linguistics, our program offers the unique experience of working across disciplinary lines and integrating research on language, literacy, culture, and writing, and is one of only a few programs in the world that gives students the option of exploring first- and second-language literacy in English.

    Our curriculum is built on the concept of the teacher-scholar. We help doctoral students conduct innovative research and we promote teaching practices that are informed by research. Our students become accomplished teacher-scholars known for their enthusiasm, research, teaching, and publications. They enjoy careers as faculty members, literacy researchers, writing program directors, academic administrators, and expert consultants.

    The Composition and Applied Linguistics program has a low-residency requirement. Students take face-to-face classes on the IUP campus for four weeks during the summer and online classes during the fall and spring semesters.

    We welcome students who wish to explore the ever-widening contexts of literacy and language around the world and who recognize the importance, value, and beauty of literacy research and instruction.

    The PhD in Safety Sciences program has no equal. It's the only part-time, hybrid, distance learning/summer campus-course PhD program in the United States. IUP’s program attracts working professionals because it’s structured as an applied research science degree. In this program, you’ll develop sophisticated research, analytical, and problem-solving skills that prepares you equally well to advance in safety science leadership careers in industry, government, and academia.

    The curriculum is intentionally balanced to appeal to a broad student base and reflect the reality of safety science as a generalized field that spans almost every industry and workplace type.

    Build your research skills as you continue working. While you'll be required to come to campus each summer for week-long courses, you can take online courses throughout the year. This allows you to remain in your current position while completing the degree, wherever you are in the world.

    This highly hands-on, 2-year program prepares students to meet the U.S. Secretary of the Interior standards to work as professional archaeologists, as well as become Register of Professional Archaeologists certified upon graduation.

    Our Athletic Training MS program provides a strong foundation for your career through a balance of both classroom and clinical training. Through this program, you’ll prepare to take the Board of Certification exam and enter the field of athletic training.

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) profession is projected to grow by 17 percent within the next 10 years.     Accomplish the next step toward becoming a registered dietitian-nutritionist: Complete the two-year, accredited, IUP Dietitian-Nutritionist Program (DNP) through the Department of Allied and Public Health’s Master of Science in Food and Nutrition.

    Enrolled students will earn their master’s degree as well as earn eligibility to sit for the national examination for registered dietitian-nutritionists upon successful program completion.     Our MBA, named a Best Value for Your Money program by Money Magazine, is designed for recent graduates along with junior-level executives seeking an advanced master's program to prepare them for a career in business and management. One of less than 5 percent of business schools world-wide accredited by the AACSB, the program enables you to specialize in areas ranging from marketing and finance to human relations and international business.

    The MBA is offered on our main campus and online. Full-time students can complete the program in as little as 12 months. Courses are scheduled for both day and night sessions, including a full schedule of course offerings in the summer.     The Music Performance specialization is designed to enhance individual musicianship, technique, and knowledge of a variety of musical styles, with the goal of preparing students for a career in the performing arts.     The Simulation and Technology certificate will present an avenue to prepare nurses and faculty for roles in clinical practice and education, including those teaching in licensed practical nurse (LPN), pre-licensure registered nurse (RN), graduate nursing, and staff development settings. The certificate program will provide courses that focus on leadership, pedagogical teaching strategies, curriculum design or evaluation methods, designing, implementing, and evaluating simulation scenarios, informatics, teaching via distance education, and the use of technology in the classroom and clinical settings.

    The 12-credit certificate will include courses related to leadership, informatics, teaching strategies, and simulation for the graduate student to use technology and simulation in a clinical or lab setting under the guidance of an experienced informatics nurse or faculty.

    The 15 credit, post-Master's program - considered the leading principal certification program in PA - is a rigorous, one-year commitment to PK-12 school building level leadership excellence. It is specifically designed for experienced, Pennsylvania educators (PDE Level II certification) who aspire to be elementary or secondary school principals and who have the support of their current PK-12 school district and mentor principals.
